Newcastle’s next generation of designers steps up

Newcastle’s emerging design talent is taking over University House this November, with University of Newcastle Visual Communication Design graduates presenting their final work in On Every Corner.

On Friday, 20 November, On Every Corner will bring together student work across branding, print, digital design, publications, animation and more.

Looking ahead, Isabella Donn, On Every Corner Producer and graduating student, says the exhibition is just a first step for students to connect with local professionals, as they aim to build more bridges and opportunities in the industry.

“We have a lot of extremely talented, hard-working students in our program. The balance of full-time study, with work on the side, starting a freelancing business, and building a portfolio can be exhausting – so this exhibition showcases more than just technical talent, but across-the-board attitudes of determination for success.

Whilst the talent is there, students often struggle to afford manufacturing costs, find mentoring opportunities, and gather real industry insights outside of a busy life. When professionals come to events like this, they can truly support student talent and show the university the diverse and lively industry we’re heading in to.”

The exhibition takes its name from the idea that design is everywhere – from street signs and coffee cups to websites, transport signage, book covers and social media.

Created by the graduating Bachelor of Visual Communication Design cohort, the event is designed not only to showcase student work, but also to bring Newcastle’s wider creative community together.

For many of the students involved, the exhibition is an opportunity to connect with local studios, freelancers, businesses and established designers as they prepare to enter the industry.

The evening will feature work from across the degree, highlighting both the creative and practical sides of visual communication and the role design plays in helping people navigate, understand and connect with the world around them.

The exhibition is free to attend and open to industry professionals, local businesses, creatives and anyone interested in seeing what Newcastle’s next generation of designers has been working on.
