Spend Sundays with Newcastle’s local producers

Skip the supermarket queues this Sunday and spend the morning wandering among Newcastle’s local farmers, producers, bakers, and makers at Newcastle City Farmers Market.

Held at Newcastle Showground most Sundays of the month, the market is your chance to shop directly from the people who grow, make, and produce what ends up in your basket.

Think fresh fruit and vegetables, handmade pasta, sourdough, pastries, cheese, and plenty of gourmet treats for the week ahead.

A Newcastle market with history

Newcastle City Farmers Market has been part of the Hunter’s food scene for more than two decades.

It began at Broadmeadow Basketball Stadium in late 2004 before moving to Newcastle Showground in early 2005. Since then, it’s welcomed thousands of shoppers from Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, the wider Hunter, and Mid North Coast.

More than 20 years on, the market remains a much-loved Sunday ritual, bringing the community together over fresh produce, good food, and the people behind it.

Meet the people behind your food

One of the best things about shopping at a farmers market is knowing a little more about where your food comes from.

Rather than grabbing something from a supermarket shelf, you can chat with the people who grew it, baked it or made it. Ask a farmer how something was grown, find out where a product was made, or pick up a few tips on how best to store and use it at home.

What’s on offer?

Stalls span fresh fruit and vegetables, organic sourdough, handmade pasta, cheeses, eggs, meat, and seafood.

Among the local and regional producers are Cosgrove Produce, Oysters Direct, Red Belly Gourmet, Tilligerry Organic Produce, Ussher’s Bananas Coopernook, Wollombi Produce and Trading Company, Bills Organic Bakery, and Hunter Valley Pasta Co.

Then there’s all the good stuff you probably didn’t put on the shopping list.

Sweet treats include handmade chocolates, cakes, biscuits, slices, French pastries, German pretzels and Greek baked goods. On the savoury side, expect salami, charcuterie and cured meats alongside homemade pies, sausage rolls, pasties, jams, chutneys, sauces, olives, and tapenades.

Come for the groceries, stay for breakfast

The weekly shop doesn’t have to be a quick dash in and out. Once you’ve made your way through the produce stalls, there are plenty of reasons to stick around for breakfast or brunch.

Grab a coffee or chai, pick up a freshly baked croissant or sample international flavours from Colombian, Lebanese, and Tibetan food stalls.

It’s the kind of Sunday morning where the grocery list quickly becomes secondary to whatever smells good at the next stall.

Beyond the food

Food might be the main drawcard, but there’s more to browse once you’ve filled the shopping bag.

Local artisans bring handmade quilts and sewn goods, wooden toys, bread boards, soaps, beauty products and lavender goods, alongside Fair Trade products, hemp clothing and skincare.

The stalls change and evolve, meaning even regular visitors can discover something new to take home.
