A new play is coming to the Civic that explores the complicated bonds of sisterhood

Family reunions can be complicated at the best of times, but throw in a record-breaking Newcastle heatwave, years of unresolved tension and a broken air conditioner, and things are bound to get interesting.

From November 12–21, local theatre company Cats in the Cupboard Productions will bring its new play She, Her & I to Civic Theatre's Playhouse, exploring family, grief, and the complicated relationships between three estranged sisters.

City of Newcastle Executive Manager Civic Theatre, Leonie Wallace said.

“As the final production in the UpStage program for 2026, we are delighted to present Cats in the Cupboard Productions to the Playhouse stage with She, Her & I.

"Written by local playwright Mikaela Corrigan, this compelling new work highlights Civic Theatre’s ongoing commitment to supporting new works, nurturing local talent, and showcasing diverse voices and original storytelling.” as Mikaela explains,

"I was raised by strong and powerful women who taught me that there is strength in vulnerability. I hope audiences see this show and leave with a new found appreciation and love for the women that raised them."

Set during a sweltering Newcastle summer, the story follows three estranged sisters reunited in their childhood home to care for their dying mother.

While Nora and Clara left Newcastle years ago, Lou never left home. Now, old resentments and unresolved tensions resurface, made worse by a broken air conditioner, a questionable obsession with musical instruments, and a nicotine addiction.

Following its 2025 production of This Restless House, Cats in the Cupboard Productions returns with another locally created work, closing out Civic Theatre's UpStage at the Playhouse season for 2026.

At its heart, She, Her & I is a Newcastle story about universal experiences, from growing up and leaving home to returning, reconnecting and learning how to let go.
