Take a look at what's planned for Newcastle Ocean Baths

One of Newcastle's most iconic coastal landmarks is entering its next chapter, with updated plans revealed for the final stage of the Newcastle Ocean Baths upgrade.

Following community and heritage feedback, City of Newcastle has refined its Stage 2 design with changes to the amenities, accessibility, roof design, and preservation of the Baths’ historic features.

The new plans include a more open amenities layout, with family change rooms across the southern and central pavilions. Accessible amenities and a Changing Places facility will also move closer to accessible parking and the pool access ramp.

The pavilion's roof has been redesigned with a glazed finish and engineered timber frame, allowing more natural light and ventilation while appearing to "float" above the original building.

Heritage remains a focus, with changes to the seating near the Canoe Pool designed to better showcase the historic seawall, while a second awning will complement the much-loved Art Deco façade.

And good news for early-morning swimmers – a cafe and kiosk are still part of the plans, offering sit-down and takeaway options with the potential for early opening hours.

What happens next?

The amended development application will go on public exhibition for 28 days, giving the community another chance to provide feedback.

Following approval, the project will move into detailed design, with a construction tender expected to be awarded in mid-2028.
