Sleep in a historic Red Rattler at this Dungog retreat
Tucked into the rolling hills of Dungog, Carriageway offers something a little different from your typical weekend away, with historic Red Rattler train carriages transformed into cosy accommodation, peaceful countryside surrounds, and a place to gather for everything from romantic escapes to weddings.
But the real beauty of Carriageway goes far beyond its historic train carriages and peaceful country setting. Behind every beautifully prepared room and every guest welcomed is a story of hope, restoration and new beginnings.

As a social enterprise of Destiny Haven, Carriageway helps women who have experienced addiction and complex trauma discover that their past does not have to define their future.
A stay with a story to tell
Located at 4426 Clarence Town Road, Carriageway brings together eight accommodation options across the property, including four original Red Rattler carriages, a Station Master's Cottage, and romantic spa apartments.
Together, the accommodation can sleep almost 40 guests, making it just as suited to a couples' getaway as a weekend away with family or friends.

The carriages themselves date back to the era when the distinctive brick-red trains travelled across New South Wales, carrying generations of commuters and country travellers.
Today, their original character remains part of the appeal, with timber panelling, curved ceilings, railway memorabilia, and thoughtful touches that give each stay a sense of nostalgia without sacrificing modern comforts.

Inside, the self-contained carriages feature a queen bedroom, bunks, lounge and dining area, kitchenette and private bathroom, while screened verandahs offer somewhere to sit back and take in the surrounding countryside.

And the team hasn't forgotten the little things. Guests receive complimentary cheese and biscuits and sparkling wine on arrival, while those booking one of the romantic spa apartments are treated to a hamper of handmade Belgian chocolates, jams, and relishes from the property's sister social enterprise, The Diamond Collection.

For Janine Epere, CEO and Co-Founder of Destiny Haven, Carriageway is about more than a unique place to stay. It’s an opportunity for guests to step away from the pace of everyday life, reconnect and experience the property's history in a whole new way.
“There's something quite magical about Carriageway. These beautiful old Red Rattlers have carried people on journeys for generations, and now they've found a new purpose, welcoming people to slow down, reconnect and make memories together,” she says.
“I love that guests can step away from the busyness of life, breathe in the country air and experience a little of the peace and beauty that surrounds us here. It's a place with history, character and a story that's still being written.”

There's space to wander, fire pits for evenings outdoors, and even a train line running through the property, where railway enthusiasts can watch passing trains from the bridge.
Hospitality with a bigger purpose
Carriageway's story took a new direction when Destiny Haven, a not-for-profit residential program supporting women rebuilding their lives after trauma, addiction and hardship, took on the business lease around 2022.
The opportunity came about when Destiny Haven founder Janine learned that the property was going to auction. After connecting with its previous owner, the two worked towards an arrangement that would allow Destiny Haven to manage the retreat and use it as one of its social enterprises.

Rather than simply providing another source of income, the business creates practical opportunities for women in the residential program to develop workplace and life skills, including housekeeping and property maintenance.
The women live at Destiny Haven, around four kilometres away, and work alongside the team at Carriageway as part of the program.
“At Destiny Haven, we've always believed that recovery is about so much more than leaving addiction behind. It's about helping women rediscover who they are, recognise the gifts and abilities within them, and begin to believe that their lives can be beautiful and purposeful again”, says Janine.
It's a model that gives the retreat a purpose beyond the stay itself, with bookings helping fund Destiny Haven's work while providing experience women can carry into future employment.
A place to celebrate
While the accommodation is the obvious drawcard, Carriageway is also growing into a destination for gatherings and celebrations.
The team has hosted wedding ceremonies and receptions, birthdays, anniversaries, lunches and dinners, with an outdoor chapel featuring stained glass, a bell and a countryside backdrop for intimate weddings.

Looking ahead, the vision is to build on this side of the business, creating more opportunities for couples, families and friends to come together somewhere a little removed from the usual event spaces.
“One of the things I love most about Carriageway is seeing people gather here to celebrate life's beautiful moments,” Janine says. “Whether it's a wedding, an anniversary or simply families and friends making time for one another, there's something very special about creating a place where memories are made.
“Our dream is to see Carriageway continue to grow as a destination for weddings, celebrations and meaningful gatherings. And what makes that dream even sweeter is knowing that every celebration helps us create more opportunities for women to rebuild their lives.”
Make a weekend of Dungog
Of course, part of the appeal of staying at Carriageway is the chance to explore a corner of the Hunter that feels a world away from the busier wine regions.
Dungog is particularly well suited to those who like their weekends outdoors, with Barrington Tops National Park offering rainforest walks, scenic trails and expansive views, while Dungog Common has become a drawcard for mountain bikers, with a network of trails through the surrounding landscape.

Closer to town, visitors can spend an afternoon wandering heritage streets, browsing local galleries and shops, or stopping into a cafe or brewery.
The town's museum and historic James Theatre offer a glimpse into its local history and creative community, while nearby villages and country roads make for an easy day of exploring.
Whether you're planning a romantic escape, a weekend of outdoor adventure or a celebration with family and friends, Carriageway offers a different way to experience Dungog – one where the accommodation is part of the story, the countryside sets the pace and your stay helps contribute to something meaningful.
