Modern Asian eats, and punchy cocktails on Darby Streets
Some Newcastle restaurants just have that magic combination of knockout food, excellent drinks and a buzzing atmosphere. Light Years Asian Diner is one of them.

Since opening on Darby Street in 2021, Light Years has become one of Newcastle’s most popular restaurants. The dining room is consistently busy, whether it’s a Friday lunch, date night or big group dinner—and honestly, we get it.

Housed in a beautiful art deco building, the light-filled space features soaring double-height ceilings, lush greenery, custom curved booths, long tables made for groups and an oversized pink marble bar.
It’s colourful, playful and just polished enough, with plenty of spots for diners and drinkers to watch the bartenders in action.

Expect modern Asian flavours, plenty of punch and dishes that make it almost impossible to keep your chopsticks to yourself.
Choosing what to order is the tricky part. Kick things off with the Light Years Ceviche with coconut, chilli and kaffir lime, or go straight for the prawn and ginger dumplings with red vinegar and shellfish oil.

The Spicy Korean Fried Chicken Bao are always going to make friends, while the Miso Caramel Eggplant and Cumin Spiced Cauliflower more than hold their own.

For the main event, the 5 Spice Roasted Duck Pancakes, Crispy Masterstock Pork Belly and Wagyu Beef Rendang are made for passing around the table. Add a Light Years Special Fried Rice and you’ve got a feast worth loosening the waistband for.

The oversized bar isn’t just there to look pretty. The cocktail list is punchy and playful, backed by a thoughtfully put-together wine list. Order a round, settle into a booth and let the soundtrack, dim lighting and high-energy atmosphere do their thing.

Light Years opens from 5pm Monday to Thursday and from 12pm Friday to Sunday, trading late every night. Tables of eight or more dine from one of the banquet menus, while groups of 20 or more choose the Premium Selection banquet. Dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice, and children under 12 can order from the kids’ menu.
Book ahead, gather the crew and arrive hungry, Light Years is one of those Newcastle restaurants that delivers the full package.
